Ormati Clinic
In rural areas in Tanzania there are few medical facilities, sparse roads and only haphazard transportation to provide access by pregnant women. Women who need pre-natal care and access to clean birthing conditions must walk for tens of kilometers. Giving birth by the side of the road is a common occurrence with the resulting post-partum mortality or injury that one might expect.
We propose to build a prototype rural clinic in a remote area in Tanzania. It will serve and area of 400 square kilometers populated by over 2,000 Maasai. Qualified staff consisting of a doctor and nurse will be assigned to the clinic and paid by the Tanzanian government. We also have the commitment of the same dedicated Tanzanians who we have watched over the last eight years succeed with the construction and supervision of area schools using philanthropic contributions.
Clean Delivery Kit Project
A woman dies from complications in childbirth every minute — about 529,000 each year — the vast majority of them in developing countries. A woman in sub-Saharan Africa has a 1 in 16 chance of dying in pregnancy or childbirth compared to 1 in 8700 iin North America and northern Europe.
Clean Delivery Kits are inexpensive and contain supplies that help women and their newborns avoid infections during home births. The CDK contents are a sterile pad that provides a clean surface for mother to lie on during childbirth, latex gloves to reduce disease transmission, and a sterile scalpel essential for clean cutting of the umbilical cord. In addition, the kit includes a piece of antiseptic soap to clean birth attendants’ hands before delivery and to clean the mother’s perineum, some disinfectant pads, 2 pieces of string to tie the umbilical cord prior to cutting, two 3 x 3 inch sterile gauze pads, two sanitary pads and belt, two flannel receiving blankets, and a Rapid HIV testing kit to determine if the mother is HIV positive. A single dose of Nevirapine is in the kit to be given to the mother and infant at the time of delivery reduces HIV infection by 50%.
Kids with Camera Camps
The program provides an opportunity for youth between the ages of 10 and 15 to explore photography and depict unique and insightful perspectives of their own lives in their world. Armed with only a camera, students can discover new and creative outlets to express themselves.
ACG will provide a point-and-shoot digital or film camera (depending on location) to each child to use during the seven-day camp. The major goal of this program is two-part: to have fun and to engage in conversation while viewing each others pictures through instant feedback that a digital camera will provide. The children will also build a body of work to exhibit in a high profile venue where the pictures will be sold. All proceeds from the sales will be going towards the education of children in their respective communities, i.e. books, uniforms, school supplies, and tuition for children whose families cannot afford school.
Equipment needed: point-and-shoot digital and film cameras, 35mm film in b&w and color, sd/compact flash cards, digital printing paper, batteries, laptops, portable printers.
